When Helena was looking for a Canadian pre-university summer program back in 2015, she deliberately chose UBC in Vancouver.
“I wanted a mix of studying an academic subject far from home with opportunities to explore a city. And Vancouver was the farthest I could get from Toronto!” she laughs.
In 2018, she returned to Future Global Leaders as a student monitor. “I thought back to when I was a student, and the role my monitors had. For me, being a monitor was very different, but just as rewarding! Connecting with the students was amazing.” Although the program is a lot bigger now, what hadn’t change were the students. “Every student who comes here comes with a purpose. They want to make friends, they want to learn and they want to experience new things. They’re motivated by school and want to broaden their horizons.”
Helena is now entering her second year at the UBC Sauder School of Business, and says she learned a lot as a Future Global Leader monitor. “You meet so many people from so many different walks of life and from all around the world. I learned so much about people and that’s something that’s going to stick with me, not only at Sauder but anywhere in my life.”
Best memory as a Student Live in Monitor for Future Global Leaders 2018:
“There are so many little funny stories that happened every day, it’s hard to choose!”
